If you’re a fan of embroidery and you love to cross-stich, then you need to know about a free tool called Cstitch. What it does is it takes whatever image you give it and it turns it into a cross-stitch pattern. Complete 4 steps and you will end up with a PDF of the cross-stitch pattern and a list of the colors in the pattern.

Cstitch is available for Windows and Linux. Focusing on Windows alone, it must be mentioned that Cstitch does not have to be installed. To get it up and running on a Windows-powered PC, you must download an archive, extract its contents, and run the Cstitch executable.

Once you launch Cstitch, a Quick Help prompt will show up and present the first of four steps you must go through. Presented in detail here, these 4 steps are: choose your pattern colors; compare color choices; compare and edit square images; set symbol size and create a PDF pattern.

Cstitch is free and open source software released under a GNU General Public License. You can use it for as long as you want, without having to part with your hard earned money.

Cstitch works as advertised. It is a free tool that takes images and turns them into cross-stitch patterns. A definite must for anyone who is into cross-stitch.

Pros

Cstitch is available for Windows and Linux. Cstitch does not have to be installed. Cstitch supports JPG, PNG, GIF and other image formats for the input.
